David Atkinson
Senior Will and Estate Planner, Scotiatrust
David is responsible for providing advice and guidance to Scotiatrust clients for their will and estate planning strategies. He has been with the Scotiabank Group™ since 2000 and has worked in the financial industry since 1996.
David is a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts program at Waterloo University and the Bachelor of Laws program at Osgoode Hall. His memberships include the Law Society of Upper Canada.
David remains active in his community as a part-time lecturer of Business Law at
Wilfrid Laurier University.
Sandy Binning
Trust Officer, Scotiatrust
Sandy is responsible for ongoing communication with the beneficiaries and cotrustees of estates and trusts administered by Scotiatrust. She has been with the Scotiabank Group and has worked in the financial services industry since 2000.
Sandy holds a Marketing diploma from Fanshawe College and has completed the Canadian Securities Course through the Canadian Securities Institute. She is currently working towards the Specialist, Trust Institute diploma through the Institute of Canadian Bankers.
Sandy remains active in her community as a volunteer for the United Way and is involved with her local softball, ringette, and ball hockey leagues.
Julia Twynstra
Account Manager Private Banking
Julia is responsible for managing banking relationships at Scotia Private Banking. Her previous role as a Branch Manager combined with her extensive sales experience in both retail and small business, provide her with a solid understanding of the financial solutions offered through the Bank. Julia has been with the Scotiabank Group™ and has worked in the financial services industry since 1990. Julia holds the Personal Financial Planner designation and has completed the Canadian Securities Course through the Canadian Securities Institute, and the Investment Funds in Canada course through the Institute of Canadian Bankers.
Julia remains active in her community as a volunteer with the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event and with various fundraising activities in support of breast cancer prevention through St. Mary’s General Hospital. She has also been a volunteer for several years with the Canadian Bankers Association in facilitating financial seminars for students in Kitchener-Waterloo Secondary Schools.
Tom Fernandez, B.A. (Econ), Associate Director
Insurance Specialist
Tom joined ScotiaMcLeod in April 2000, bringing with him many years of experience working in the estate and financial services industry. He has extensive knowledge in both personal and corporate estate planning. Tom holds a Bachelors Degree from Laurentian University, with a specialization in Economics.
Tom enjoys working in his community, where he coaches minor league hockey and soccer and donates his time to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
Malcolm D. Burrows
Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services
Scotia Private Client Group is Canada’s largest national service provider to private foundations and operates Aqueduct Foundation, a public planning foundation. Prior to joining SPCG in 2004, Malcolm worked in the charitable sector for University of Toronto, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, and The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation for over 13 years. He was Chair of Government Relations for the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP) from 2002 to 2006. Through CAGP, he has contributed to new rules for gifts of public securities, donation tax shelters, and charitable remainder trusts. In 2000, he helped create “Charitable Options”, a category of stock options for charitable giving adopted by the Toronto Stock Exchange.
He is a well-known speaker and writer on gift planning, the Course Director for CAGP’s Canadian Gift Planning course in Banff and Mt. Tremblant, and a “Friend of CAGP”. He is on the editorial board of the quarterly journal, The Philanthropist, and the contributing editor of the monthly publication Gift Planning in Canada.
